This is what I'm sometimes asked to read, critique. And it really does put me in a bit of a pickle, because after "it's nice" I'm a bit hard-pressed for any more comments. Honestly, I can't tell if a poem is good or not by literary standards. All I can tell you is whether I like it or not. And I don't often like poems.
I mean, I write them too, but er... gosh. How do you expect me to judge your poems when I can't vouch for the standard of mine? Poetry is like love songs without the music. There are some I like, some I don't, and everyone else will have a different opinion.
i think that to the untrained mind like mine, 'i like it' and 'i dont like it' might be good enough for some people.
but then again your expertise is in Lit, so people might expect something more from yer.
i write occasionally, and gotten comments from 'oh I loved it!' to 'i hope you're not doing this on a regular basis man' to a word by word analysis of it complete with suggestions for changes...
as long as people learn not to take your comments too personally
