All of us grow up in black and white worlds - there are things that are bad, and things that are good. We only start to notice that there are shades of grey as we get older, but even this realization does not release us from the innate belief that some things are more acceptable then others.
Selfishness, vanity, greed, cruelty... These are all traits we recognize to be "bad". It is easy to denounce someone who displays these traits and then hold ourselves to higher standards, vowing not to be "selfish" to the point that we revel in our own saintliness. We wonder why others cannot see our goodness; why they don't seem to see the monumental effort we have put it to be good.
The truth is that people do see it. But very few are going to believe it. Being good because you don't want to be bad is a terrible way to live. Who is it being done for? The less people pay attention to your goodness, the more your martyr complex will grow.
We are so unwilling to be bad that we are either deluded to our own behavior or go to the other extreme of self-denial. There are times we have to be selfish, or vain, or greedy, or cruel, and there are times we just ARE like that because we're humans with needs.
It is far better to accept that we are sometimes cruel, lazy, inconsiderate and try to be better than delude ourselves into thinking that we have never been this way because we are afraid of being bad.
