Hong Kong. Poor girl living with parents and boyfriend in a small dingy apartment. She has a job selling second hand clothes.
She comes home to the dark flat. Her boyfriend returns shortly after. She's had a long day herself and tries to cuddle, lying on his chest. She feels his body respond to hers and they have sex in the missionary position, but without feeling. He finishes quickly without her reaching satisfaction. He leaves the room without a word to prepare dinner as she lies on the bed alone in the evening darkness.
It's raining in the evening. She wanders in the streets and takes shelter in a row of shophouses. The shops aren't very big, but she thinks to get a job at one of them. Rich young man is in the area too. Notices her and admires her perseverance after repeated rejection. At the last store - a pet shop, he steps in to help her get a job.
We are introduced to the owner. Late 30s - a little strange, prickly woman, wants to make jewelery for a living, but her products look cheap, she has no aesthetic sense for it. She sells them as accessories for pets. Girl appreciates the effort and praises them sincerely. She gets the job working there.
The young man is intrigued by her - she's unlike anyone he's ever met. She's quiet, unassuming, surprisingly innocent for someone living on the streets.
She enjoys his company but is slightly intimidated by his position and doesn't think anything will come out of this friendship. He likes her a lot and tries to bring her home. She's just glad to have someone care about her, finally. It's a new feeling in the wretched existence that was her life and she enjoys his company. She grows to like him.
The lighting in the scenes between them is a lot brighter, warmer.
Some other events happen in between that I can't remember, but there are other girls involved and the apathetic poor boyfriend who doesn't care what happens to the girl outside of the flat.
There is an offer made later, but our protagonist rejects the rich man's advances because she realises that they ultimately make a poor match in terms of status. Too many years of different lives and the social divide ensures that they would not be happy together. There is too much she doesn't know about his life, and too much he doesn't know about hers - these differences alone would drive them apart. She tells him no, and they separate - again taking up the mantles they once wore in their previous existences before meeting each other.
