When I was a little girl, I believed in fairy tales and happy endings, the romance of chivalry and daring rescues from fire-breathing dragons. I believed in the passion of love that swept you off your feet, leaving your mouth dry, your breath caught, your heart racing. The story that they taught us was that this exists, this is real, this is something you can hope for. But what they didn't realize was that they were teaching us the dangerous lesson that this was what love was supposed to look like.
We advance our understanding of the subject as we mature and acquire additional information from the media. Advertisements with beautiful women swooning over flowers, perfume, diamonds, chocolate, proclaim that these gifts will show her how much you love her. Movies tell us that we will always end up with the one we truly love, whatever trials and tribulations occur. We are caught up in the whirlwind that is Valentine's Day, where we buy gifts to shower our loved ones with.
Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. The 14th of February is a day to celebrate love. While you may not endorse or condone the expensive gifts people believe will help them advance their cause, it does not make the celebration wrong. How the world wants us to commemorate a day doesn't detract from the fact that millions of people act the way they do because they believe in love.
