Recently I had an encounter with this side of society, and fact of the matter is that I think you can't blame them for coming off as uncaring.
They aren't, first of all. They're just as caring as the next person. The problem lies in who the next person is - most of the upper echelons of society don't exactly hang out with people from all walks of life. I, for instance, am decidedly middle class and hang out with the rest of the bourgeoisie. I don't know what it's like to survive on less than $1000 a month, or to aspire for my children to have degrees. (because well, that goes without saying that they'll have to have one, whether they like it or not.)
Case in point - this is a conversation I had with one of the elite.
To be fair I'd just said, "So you're not a real doctor" (he was a medical student, I believe) so I suppose he was trying to expunge the aspersion I'd just made on his name.
Him: I have more doctorates than most people.
Me: One?
He looked surprised and perhaps a little affronted and said "Two, actually". Which neatly demonstrates the class divide. Most people don't have doctorates. Nobody I know has more than one. To be fair, two is definitely more than what most people have, but comparatively speaking, the numerical difference between people who hold one and those who hold two is probably negligible.
Also to be fair: I just wanted to relate this anecdote but to give it legitimacy, I felt it necessary to pretend I had an actual point.
