Item B) Ultimately Marten did not promise to wait for Faye, because she made him. I didn't see Steve or Ellen making any of those kind of promises. Though I admit this is a bit silly, because I don't see how any quarrelling couple would make promises not to see anyone else after they broke up. Nonetheless, Marten and Faye were not in love, and Marten had no obligation (even his self-imposed one was broken by Faye) to wait for her. A couple who's been dating a while should have deeper feelings than that. Especially on the part of Ellen, since they've been sexing it up, and you know, with women, intimacy = love. And if you're in love with the other person, dating someone else shouldn't be that easy. Unless you're in denial. But I'm over-analysing AGAIN. Plus, Faye DID string him along. And Dora's liked Marten since forever.
Item C) Ellen broke up with Steve. To put it in our parallel situation, it would be as if Faye rejected Marten and THEN proceeded to date someone else. Like weird coffee guy. Or maybe Sven. (Ha ha)
Item D) Their parting, as you will see from above, was acrimonious. Marten and Faye did not "break up", they were still friends after that. And he asked Faye if she was alright with it. She was upset, but she felt she was to blame too. None of those polite niceities in the Ellen-Steve saga.
So there you have it. Quite different situations, and from the looks of it, Ellen still has a lot of things to work out with Steve. Given that she's ... what... 18?, I don't think she's going to realize that yet. And her attack on Marten was totally uncalled for because she's not explaining herself, she's drawing attention to something else.
If I were to defend Marten, his argument would run as follows: First, he and Faye never dated. Second, Faye all but made him promise not to wait for her. Third, Ellen broke up with Steve, but Ellen was the first to start dating again. In my book, it's the dumpee that gets first dibs. =P Fourth, when you have an unhappy parting and you do something that you KNOW would hurt the other person it's like throwing oil onto a fire. Granted, it's a little difficult to ask your ex if he's okay with you dating other people, and nor should you be obligated to, but... Poor Steve! He nearly got beaten up by a psycho scooter chick and Ellen gets to go on a date with her touchy-feely classmate!
All things said and done, Ellen isn't Faye, Steve isn't Marten, and Chris is most certainly not Dora. The dynamics are too different for the situations to be closely comparable. In the barest terms, perhaps they could, but without Ellen's explanations or enough context, I would have to agree that the situations are very different.
